One of the most exciting movements in the food and drink industry in South Africa at the moment is the local gin scene. Innovative, small-batch distillers are setting new benchmarks for gin, and there’s one standout gin that we absolutely love: Cape Fynbos Gin.
I was never a massive fan of gin until my Mother-in-Law got me to try some when she was visiting 7-8 years ago. I have since discovered the wide range of amazing gins beyond Gordon’s! And who doesn’t love a beautiful bottle???
We first discovered this Cape Fynbos Gin during a family trip to a wine farm in Stellenbosch, South Africa and every trip since, we bring back a bottle or two. Originally from the Eastern Cape, Lucas lived in Stellenbosch from the age of 18. We then lived there together from 2007, before our move to Ashby de la Zouch. From the very first sip, this gin reminds me of our Stellenbosch ‘home’ and we are delighted to be one of the first UK stockists and to share this gin with you!
What is Fynbos?
Fynbos is an Afrikaans word meaning fine-leaved plants. Fynbos is composed of around 8,500 species from several key families—Restionaceae, Proteaceae, Ericaceae, Rutaceae and Iridaceae—many endemic to and part of the Cape Floristic Region, or the Cape Floral Kingdom. Fynbos vegetation thrives in poor soils under tough climatic conditions and the Cape’s hot, dry summers. Many types of plants from the fynbos biome can be found in close proximity to vineyards in the Cape Winelands, and can potentially influence a wine’s aromas or flavors due to the spread organic materials like plant oils or pollen.
Cape Fynbos Gin is small-batch distilled gin from the finest white spirits and blended with pure granite mountain spring water. Infused with premium juniper berries and over 30 indigenous botanicals, sustainably hand-harvested in the Cape Floral Kingdom (West Coast), for their bark, roots, berries, flowers, stems, peels and leaves. Many of these botanicals are members of the fynbos group of plants for which the region is world-famous. This use of the local, indigenous botanicals makes this gin totally unique and very South African.
It’s a wonderful gin mixed with organic dry tonic, or try drinking it pure over ice.
We can’t wait to hear what you think of it.
Cheers! Claire
